I love my SteelSeries Merce keyboard. Not an over expensive solution for taking a little more control over applications. I do a little gaming during my breaks and sometimes in the evening so I’m not just using it for development. I have profiles configured for various tasks so the import and export bug I was experiencing grew very annoying.

I knew I had once exported profiles, edited them directly then imported them. I done this to get around another bug in the software where I cannot rename a profile. Instead I just renamed it in the exported file. It has been weeks since I started using the keyboard on my laptop, where previously I was using it on my PC. So for weeks I have had multiple profiles named with a single letter, maybe two because that is all the application lets me enter before no longer highlighting the text field.

This is an issue easily forgiving for the price of the keyboard and the fact that there is a quick way around it. It took me months to re-discover the quick way so maybe it was not so quick for me. The solution? Simply disable the use of “skins”. I do not ever remember changing skin settings, maybe on my PC it does not use a skin by default but it appears that when a skin is in use we cannot export or import profiles. The dialogue window for those features just won’t appear. I almost gave up but like a true IT professional I explored every menu option and setting.

Very happy now.

I was trying to move a window back to the visible screen as it was hidden well off my desktop. It was positioned as if I still had a second monitor attached despite my video card settings being changed to only have one active. I’m guessing the cause is within the specific software and the developers not making it check the status of dual monitors etc. Some software makes the windows appear on the main desktop without any problems.

If you are having a problem there is a keyboard shortcut not written on most of the Microsoft pages I browsed so hopefully it helps.

First hold ALT + TAB or ALT +Windows button whichever is your preferred method for tabbing through windows. If you have never done this then please learn the shortcuts for tabbing through your open windows.

Tab until you are on the hidden window.

Press ALT + SPACE BAR together and a menu should appear. You can either click on Move with your mouse or hold ALT then press M. This selects the window in a way that allows you to drag it.

Move your mouse towards the screen you want the window to appear on or use the arrow keys to position the window.

I’m sorry it appears you have found a WebTechGlobal application link that has an invalid URL. This is a measure taking by my applications by checking the URL you are about to be sent too, if it does not appear to still be valid you are then sent to this page.

Please comment below or email webmaster@webtechglobal.co.uk with details on where you clicked a link, to bring you here. I can then update it for all users. I appreciate the time you take to do this and thank you for your patience.

Causes

This can happen if a site is temporary offline, not always a fault of myself or the application. I simply have this measure in place to try and detect old links that may point users to pages that webmasters have removed from their site or sites that no longer exist at all. This is obviously something that can happen years after an application is released and hopefully I can maintain them easily using these fall-backs. My applications also log this event, all part of increase customer service and general quality levels.

Need Help?

If you were looking for specific support please contact ryan@webtechglobal.co.uk, that is me, let me know this has happened to you and what it is your were looking for so I can point you in the best direction.

A couple of Easy CSV Importer users have reported that when trying to insert Google AdSense scripts to their custom post content, the script does not work. The problem can be at the point of saving the template, when WordPress escapes the content before storing in the database. Instead of explaining it to you, I’ll show you what was sent to me and give others some credit.

Hello Ryan – it appears that WordPress or the app has automatically changed the information for the Adsense block : it changed // <!– to // – and made the Adsense block unusable. I found a plugin called “Search and Replace” that helped me fix the records that were affected.

I highlighted and made bold the problem: <!– was changed to

There may be other causes so the best thing to do is double check your template design and if possible look at what is stored in the database to be sure. This should not be necessarily but it is good to rule everything out and make sure WordPress then uses the correct script in the generated posts.

Obviously you may not be an Easy CSV Importer user and still have this issue. Try correcting the broken script in the HTML window of the WYSIWYG editor then Update. Sometimes on the Update it then saves the script properly.

I’ve begun creating my first Ajax plugin and I’ve just hit my first big problem. I can’t say what the plugin does at this time. My plan is to master Ajax in WordPress then apply it to Easy CSV Importer. First I need to master it without trying to add it to ECI. The plugin itself works great, I’ve already made good use of Ajax however on activating ClassiPress my plugins Ajax fails, all of it.

The Problem

When I activate ClassiPress my plugins Ajax breaks. The failure is indicated in 3 notifications/errors shown below.

I spent 4 hours trying to figure this out, whatever I do allows the plugin to work normally until ClassiPress is activated. I assume it would happen with any theme because other plugins that use Ajax work fine with ClassiPress. Here are the main functions to give you a quick idea what I’m doing and that I’m trying to do it properly…

Using add_action(‘admin_print_scripts’, ‘wtgpt_enqueue_script’);

Tried also using add_action(‘admin_enqueue_scripts’, ‘wtgpt_enqueue_script’,10,1);

I use wp_deregister_script( ‘jquery’ );

I tried registering jquery from Google but that did not help either

I’ve also tried only loading my scripts when viewing a specific page, a plugin page but I get the same problem

if(is_admin()){ this is used at all times, none of the Ajax is to be used on the public side

Code Dump

// load admin only scripts if user is on admin pages

I clicked on a WordPress update link on my localhost and ever since doing so all I get on the page is…

Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension which is required by WordPress.

That includes sites using the old version or the new version of WordPress. I have spent a whole day installing XAMP and WAMP but both have the issue. I’m went through php.ini files, copied and wasted every extension in every possibly directory without luck.

I currently cannot do any development on Easy CSV Importer. It is delaying some important changes, if you have any problems using the BETA of ECI please download the stable version. A stable beta will come very soon just as soon as I get past this and apply some changes I had planned to do today.

Thank you for your patience.

If anyone has any information on this issue it would be very welcomed.

Is Your CSV File Ready? Test It First

Microsoft Excel

The quickest and best test is probably to open your file in Excel. It should lay out and display just like a spreadsheet. Columns and rows. Each record should use a single row, if your records have breaks over multiple rows then your file is not ready. If the data is not split into columns properly then your file is not ready.

ECI CSV File Test Tool

There is a tool on the Easy CSV Importer Start page that will also test your file. It uses the same functions to read your file as when importing the data. If it does not work, then you cannot continue. It should display your data in a tidy file, similar to excel. Despite it being there, many people contact me telling me that there are problems with various areas of the plugin. The problems often turn out to be the user getting ahead of themselves, so try not to do that. If the csv file is not valid, the required information for that file cannot be collected and saved i.e. titles. Such information is required to complete the interface at later stages.

Clean Titles

Easy CSV Importer accepts any title names and the plugin has been designed to handle special characters in the first row of the file also. However, to make it easier on the plugin and reduce processing it can help to rename your titles to something simple. Remove underscore, hyphens and spaces. Reduce the titles to single words or even abbreviations that you will easily remember. I know that if you plan to update your csv file, this may not be ideal because you would need to manually make the exact same changes to your new file. If this is the situation you are in and you think your titles may be causing you problems then please contact me so I can make the required changes for you.

Commas At Beginning Of Data Values

If you are using commas as your separator and some of your data values begin with a comma, it can sometimes cause a blank column to appear when testing your file (in the table displayed) or when importing (in the database table). This is a rare issue and most CSV files do not have data that being with a comma. If possible remove the commas or generate your data using a different separator. The reason for these issues is simply the fact that the comma appearing where it does tells a data importer that that comma is the end of the last column.

Cannot Access Dashboard/Admin Due To Blank Page

Firefox Users: Wordpress 3.2.1 seems to have some issues with certain versions of Firefox that cause hanging. Add ECI to the mix and it may be a problem. Consider everything, right now ECI is working great on my servers. Someone who was having problems with blank pages said this in an email…

I found the problem was with my version of Firefox, 3.6.18 on Centos 5.6 and Windows7. I am starting OK in MSIE 8.

Activate Error Display

If you get a blank page, please report what screen it happened on and what you were doing when it happened otherwise it is impossible to look into. You may be able to make a warning display. To do this open the easy-csv-importer.php (may be easy-csv-importer-2.php) and about 11 lines from the top you will see a function; eci_debug(false,false). Change the “false, false” to “true, false”. You can change it to “true, true” but this actives very strict error reporting and even WordPress will generate a lot of warnings with this on.

Categories Appear Not Created or Only Parent Categories Are Created

When ECI mass creates categories, many of them may be hidden on the Categories screen under the Posts menu. All you need to do is create a new category manually then delete it. This refreshes the cache. This is a well known issue, other developers have experienced it and tried to have it fixed. So far it has not been fixed, they did attempt to and thought it was but it has not. Many people come to think that Easy CSV Importer is at fault and many have actually asked for a refund because of this issue. It is simple to get around and your categories should end up displayed correctly.

Start Page Create Project Panels Missing

I found an issue myself that is caused by a php function named count(). This function is used to count the rows in a CSV file, it is mostly effecient however when I tried to use a file over 120MB I got a memory error. You will only see the memory error if you check the source code for your page. I checked because the project creation panels were no longer visible. This is due to the error preventing the page completely loading.

My file of over 120MB has 200,000 lines. In most cases this is a seriously high number of pages to create so I doubt many people will face this issue. If you do have this issue and you think it is the size of your file causing it please let me know. There will be ways to get around this problem but I will not make it priority as most users files are well under 100,000 rows and probably under 100MB with a 100MB file not causing any memory errors when using the count() function.

CSV File Not Uploading

Possible Cause One: Server Permissions

One thing the plugin cannot get around right now is some servers not giving permission for files to be uploaded and moved into the required directory. You may see a red notice with the title “File Failed To Upload” and you may even see php Warnings that look like this: Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move

This is rare and caused by your server, please contact your hosting, normally they are happy enough to change server settings.

Don’t worry whatever the case it is not a big deal. To get around any issues regarding this you simply need to upload your csv file using ftp. This is the recommend approach anyway and it is something you should get used to if your planning on many projects with ECI. Knowing your ftp settings and understanding how it works will help you maximise automation with your data providers.

Feature Image Not Showing

Possible Cause One: Dynamic Image

Most image data will be standard paths but below is an example of a different type of url. It begins with a domain like any other but instead of a full path to an image, it actually calls a script. In this case it is .aspx. Passed to the script is a set of variables that determines the image itself. Currently it does not appear this time of image url can be used to assign a featured image to a post in WordPress.

http://www.virginholidays.co.uk/dynamicimage.aspx?imageurl=/_data/Florida/images/hotels/130_1.jpg&width=386&height=203

If you have further information on this, a way to get around it or any details about specific data providers alternate methods please comment below.

WYSIWYG Editor (TinyMCE) Buttons Missing/Vanished

Possible Cause One: cFormsII Plugin

There is a plugin called cFormsII known to cause the WYSIWYG editor buttons to stop appearing. Actually the “Visual” side of the editor will stop being shown. This is easily fixed. I’ve created a seperate post for this issue. There is a setting in the cFormsII plugin you can activate that will fix the issue if you have eFormsII installed. Instructions can be read here.

Fatal Error: Cannot use string offset as an array

This happened to me when I was testing new beta features, not in a released version. I thought I would post it here anyway. This error is caused if the $csv data array stored in the WordPress options table, has been deleted or is not an array i.e. the value has been erased and is now null. Obviously that is something that should not happen and such an issue would be discovered quickly but if I did release a version that caused this. It means the damage has already been done to a projects $csv profile. You will need to reinstall the plugin, try moving the plugin files out of the plugin folder then refreshing the page. That will give access to the admin. From there we need to delete the project that has had its $csv profile deleted. That is not easily done but as I said this has only happened due to new features I’m testing, I just thought I would add the information should I ever release a version that causes this.

Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in C:\AppServ\www\wordpress-testing\eci\wp-content\plugins\easy-csv-importer-2\includes\eci_i_hooks.php on line 296

[Table 'eci.yourtable' doesn't exist] SELECT COUNT(*) FROM yourtable

If you see this error on the Start page, please ignore it. The plugin attempts a MySQL query to check if the project table it is about to create, already exists. If the table does not exist, it will always return error. It is not fatal and nothing to worry about.

WordPress MU Related Issues

Create New Project Appears To Fail, Blank Screen, Server Error 500

Do not be alarmed by this. Occasionally an installation triggers this issue, I suspect it is hosting/server configuration. Easy CSV Importer creates a new project but you get a nasty looking screen. DO NOT REFRESH! Recently someone reported ECI not working with MU and that it was showing a message regarding the CSV file already being used. I found this very strange because for that message to show, there has to be a project with the same file-name in the database already. Testing has so far confirmed that you need to refresh the page after submission to trigger this, something you should not do at any time. I will consider adding a prevention to refresh causing issues.

I experienced regular hanging when logged into my WordPress blog for over a year. It has been really driving me crazy at times, I tend to work fast and this was simply slowing me down. I never really got close to figuring out what what causing it until today, when I was creating a new Landing Page for Easy CSV Importer. That is something that needs a lot of editing and previewing. While on the Edit Post page I had the Firebug error console open on Mozilla, something I don’t normally do while creating posts.

I finally realised what was causing the hanging and forcing me to “Clear Recent History” in my browser and even restart the browser. Let me be clear that this happens on any browser.

The problem is Auto Save, something performed by admin-ajax.php and you can switch it off.

Find wp_enqueue_script(‘autosave’); in post.php, currently line 177

Comment it out or remove the line i.e two forward slashes at the front //wp_enqueue_script(‘autosave’);

Do the same with post-new.php, currently line 46

the wp_enqueue_script(‘autosave’); is only used once in each file

I’ve just posted regarding the new version 4.0 and mentioned sales are so bad I’m struggling. I then found out why.

WordPress have removed the free download from their site due to the fact it was not a fully working plugin. I’m in the processing of fixing this but it will take some time to make a free edition that provides some sort of use.

Until then can you all please comment on this page with any appreciation you have for my services. I have spent many hours on Skype recently providing support and trying to turn things around so I know I can count on you. This will serve to show the plugin and myself in a good light. Continued sales will allow me to keep this project going but it will need to happen soon.
